MOTION PICTURES

a) NLNZ will follow Library of Congress policy and assign genre/form terms according to H1913 and H2230.

All motion pictures will have at least one genre heading: either

• 655_7 Fiction films. ‡2 lcgft

OR

• 655_7 Nonfiction films. ‡2 lcgft

b) Other genre and form headings will be added on a case-by-case basis to convey aspects such as: technique, length, specific genre, audience, derivation, and accessibility

i) Technique

Technique refers to the cinematic technique of the motion picture. Most commonly these are animated films. For a description of the various types of animated films, see The moving image genre-form guide.

Examples of headings that convey technique include:

• 655_7 Animated films. ‡2 lcgft
• 655_7 3-D films. ‡2 lcgft
• 655_7 Stop-motion animation films. ‡2 lcgft
• 655_7 Machinima films. ‡2 lcgft

ii) Length

All films that have a narrative structure and are likely to be show publicly will have a heading for length.

For films that are more than forty minutes long this will be:

• 655_7 Feature films. ‡2 lcgft

For films that are less than forty minutes long this will be:

• 655_7 Short films. ‡2 lcgft

iii) Specific genre

Genre describes the narrative elements from which films are constructed, encompassing aspects such mood, setting and theme. Often films will fit into more than one genre. Examples of headings that convey genre include:

• 655_7 Comedy films. ‡2 lcgft
• 655_7 Science fiction films. ‡2 lcgft
• 655_7 Legal films. ‡2 lcgft
• 655_7 Documentary films. ‡2 lcgft
• 655_7 Biographical films. ‡2 lcgft

iv) Audience

Examples of headings that convey audience include:

v) Derivation

Derivation describes films that are based on another work (such as a novel or play, or a previous version of the film). Examples include:

• 655_7 Film adaptations. ‡2 lcgft
• 655_7 Film remakes. ‡2 lcgft

vi) Accessibility

The main two headings that convey accessibility are:

• 655_7 Video recordings for people with visual disabilities. ‡2 lcgft
• 655_7 Video recordings for the hearing impaired. ‡2 lcgft

TELEVISION PROGRAMMES

All television programmes will have at least one genre heading: either

• 655_7 Fiction television programs. ‡2 lcgft

OR

• 655_7 Nonfiction television programs. ‡2 lcgft

OR

• 655_7 Television programs. ‡2 lcgft

The genre heading “Television programs” is ONLY used for “collections of television programs that are composed of multiple genres and/or forms to which more specific headings such as Nonfiction television programs or Television comedies cannot be applied.” In such cases, you will only add the one 655 heading to the catalogue record.

Other headings will be added on a case-by-case basis to convey aspects such as: specific genre, technique, audience, derivation, and accessibility.

i) Technique
