The use of adjectival forms of map subdivisions (e.g. Maps, Topographic) has been discontinued. NLNZ will follow LC policy and bring out the form of map by the use of genre headings. These genre headings should be applied in addition to any subject headings that are necessary.

NLNZ will use authorised cartographic genre terms. The following is not a complete list of cartographic genre terms but a list of ones that are more likely to be used:

• Aeronautical charts
• Atlases
• Bathymetric maps
• Cadastral maps
• Digital maps (Used on both digitised and born digital maps)
• Geological maps
• Index maps
• Nautical charts
• Photomaps
• Physical maps
• Remote sensing maps
• Road maps
• Topographic maps
• Tourist maps

The genre/form term Maps should be applied to every map for which a more specific genre/form term is not available.
