COOKBOOKS

COOKBOOKS

In 2010, the LCSH subject heading Cookery was changed to Cooking, and, at the same time, a new genre/form term Cookbooks was established for collections of recipes. There is also a genre/form heading: Community cookbooks.

For items that are not about national or ethnic cuisines or styles, specific foods/ingredients, special diets, etc. use the subject heading Cooking:  650 _0 ‡a Cooking.

It is now National Library policy to add the genre/form term Cookbooks where applicable to monographs and serials (see the Subject Heading Manual at H 1475).

Where applicable, the genre/form term Community cookbooks should also be applied. Specificity does not apply to genre/form terms in the same way that it does to topical headings and therefore it is valid to assign both terms to works that fulfill the criteria for Community cookbooks.

  • If the item is a recipe book, add the genre/form term Cookbooks: 655 _7 ‡a Cookbooks. ‡2 lcgft
  • The genre/form term Recipes should only be used for single recipes.
  • Cookery books that contain recipes will have at least 2 headings:  a subject heading for Cooking and a genre/form term for Cookbooks.
  • Books about cooking that do not contain recipes will only have the subject heading for Cooking.

If you think people would buy the book for its recipes and those recipes make up at least one third of the content, then assign the genre/form term Cookbooks.

Cooking, New Zealand versus Cooking--New Zealand

Neither of these headings applies very often to the cookery books we catalogue.

  • Use Cooking, New Zealand for works on a specific New Zealand style of cooking. Books with this emphasis are uncommon.

Example: ABC of Kiwi food : Afghans, barbecues and chocolate fish

  • Use Cooking -- New Zealand for works about cooking in New Zealand. The focus is on location. Again there are not many books in this category.

Examples:

  • Two hundred years of New Zealand food & cookery
  • Saffron : food from the Central Otago heartland

But use Cooking for general cookery books written by New Zealanders (or anyone else). Most cookery books we see fall into this category.

Examples:

  • The modern cook / Ray McVinnie
  • Blend : recipes from Epsom Girls Grammar School

Classification reminder:

If your cookbook is a collection of recipes from a specific restaurant, see Note at Dewey 641.509.
