Te āheinga   The opportunity

Puke Ariki Library has recently become a part of the Cultural Experiences Group for Council which includes the Library, Museum and Govett Brewster and Len Lye Gallery.  In this newly created position we are looking for a Supervisor for the Taranaki Research Centre.  This role will contribute to the Library Leadership team and the strategic direction of the Library, particularly for the Research Centre, including taking supervisory control of the Library during rostered shifts.

This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of the new direction that the library and our wider group will be taking over the next few years as we integrate services and work more collaboratively across our sector.  We will be building a new Library Strategy and focussing on delivering exceptional services to our customers.

We are looking for a people leader, with expertise in Library Collections, Archives and Research/Heritage work, who understands the important functions of a Research Centre and has experience in providing access to archives and heritage collections and managing a team.

Tino takohanga   Key responsibilities    

  • Manage the Taranaki Research Centre daily operations including supporting the team and preparing rosters and daily rotations
  • Be a member of the Library Leadership team, taking responsibility for the Library as necessary
  • Contribute to strategic planning, performance monitoring and building a good team culture
  • Ensure KPIs are met and customers receive services that exceed their expectations
  • Undertake rostered shifts on the customer service counter
  • Provide efficient research services, and support the team in doing so
  • Collaborate with Education and Programming staff to ensure a range of programmes and events are delivered
  • Undertake original research on Taranaki Heritage and promote the Research Centre
  • Have Collection development responsibility for the Research Centre collection
  • Collaborate with the Curator Archives and other Puke Ariki team members to ensure archiving work is completed and archives are accessible
  • Manage a budget allocation
  • Oversee cataloguing work for the collection
  • Deliver training to staff as necessary

Ngā tino pūkenga me ngā wheako     Essential skills and experience

  • A relevant tertiary degree and Library or Archives qualification, including proven research skills, is essential
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in managing staff
  • Experience working in libraries and heritage/research services (preferably public libraries)
  • Knowledge of Archiving and cataloguing practices
  • Proven experience in a wide range of digital technologies, library and museum management systems and online databases
  • Demonstrated experience leading a team and creating a positive team culture
