Tertiary, school and public library kaimahi needed to take part in research

Chrissy Taylor is undertaking a PhD at the University of Waikato, looking at library acquisition policies relating to LGBTQIA+ communities in Aotearoa New Zealand libraries. She is looking for participants working in primary school, secondary school, and public libraries to help her by participating in an online survey (20-30mins), and an optional extra interview (up to 60 mins).

Her PhD research, titled Library Acquisition Policies in Relation to LGBTQIA+ Representation in Books for Children across New Zealand Library Systems, is being conducted with the intention of finding out how the LGBTQIA+ community of New Zealand is being supported through LGBTQIA+ specific acquisition policies. Read more about this request below.

My name is Chrissy Taylor, and I am in the second year of my PhD in the Division of Education at the University of Waikato. I am very excited and passionate about the work I am doing about library acquisition policies relating to LGBTQIA+ communities in Aotearoa New Zealand libraries. I am looking for participants working in primary school, secondary school, and public libraries to help me by participating in an online survey (20-30mins), and an optional extra interview (up to 60 mins).

My PhD research, titled Library Acquisition Policies in Relation to LGBTQIA+ Representation in Books for Children across New Zealand Library Systems, is being conducted with the intention of finding out how the LGBTQIA+ community of New Zealand is being supported through LGBTQIA+ specific acquisition policies.

I am looking for participants to be involved in Phase One (an online survey) from Primary School, Secondary School, and public libraries across New Zealand.  This phase is an anonymous online survey which will take approximately 20-30 minutes.  I am aiming for up to 120 participants, if possible, 40 from each sector. During this survey participants will answer questions about their libraries and their experience with books and the public relative to LGBTQIA+ characters and/or content. Your responses will be completely anonymous.

Following this there is the option to be a part of Phase Two (not compulsory) which will be an in-depth interview online (up to 60 minutes for the interview, and up to 30 minutes for checking the transcript of your interview).   This interview will be transcribed and sent back to you for review. This data will also be anonymised.

If you participate in both Phase One and Phase Two, I estimate this entire process will take up to two hours.  A summary of results from Phase One and Phase Two will be sent to participants, and my final PhD will be available to read through the University of Waikato website. I also hope to share my findings in the Te Rau Ora Library Life magazine.

If you have any questions, please email me at ct134@students.waikato.ac.nz with the subject line ‘research questions’, or if you would like to participate in Phase One, please email me with the subject line ‘research participation’, and I will send you full details of the research and a consent form.

This research has been approved by the University of Waikato ethics committee and is being conducted under the supervision of two current University of Waikato staff members Associate Professor Nicola Daly and Associate Professor Sonja Ellis.
