You’re connected to ideas for activities

Here are some ideas and tips on getting the best out of Library Week:

  • Contact your local newspaper and keep them updated with your library’s activities
  • Download and print the Get Connected arrows and stick them to floors, walls and windows to highlight displays, activities and sections of your library
  • Use the shelf wobblers (adhesive arrows to attach to bookshelves) to highlight your teams’ reading and music hit picks
  • Give regular visitors a wobbler to note their own favorite books
  • Create book displays with titles including days of the week – such as Monday in the title on Monday
  • Involve local shops and put a display of cookery books in the local cafe, for example - with a Library Week poster of course
  • Put up NZ’s Biggest Storytime posters in the local hall, civic centre, and schools
  • Invite local councillors and celebrities to read at Storytime
  • Have members vote for their favorite book from a list suggested by your team
  • Create a library book club
  • Offer a library journal for members to recommend their favorite book
  • Give a free library Journal to members who bring in a new member
  • Put on a special children’s Biggest Storytime, with them reading
  • Use arrows to make a maze or treasure hunt around your library
  • Host a library sleepover
  • Host a local quiz night - after all, libraries are the hub of information
  • Create your own library's story - kick it off with the first paragraph about the library and get regular members and children to add a paragraph to it over the week. Then organise a special reading of it at the end of the week
  • For the book reading, get the kids to bring their funniest or favourite item found at the back of the chair
  • Host a dress-up day for the kids - so they can dress as their favourite character from a story
  • Hold a Mock Criminal Investigation in Your Library with clues and a code that students have to solve. Then re enact the crime and award prizes
  • Hold a competition to guess the weight of a huge stack of library books
  • A competition to guess which book a passage was read from
  • Hold a literature quiz with different rounds on a variety of topics eg. Nursery Rhymes, Fairy Tales, Harry Potter etc.  Book prizes/vouchers to be awarded to the winning team
