News RoomE-verything to be sorted by digital content strategy
17 November 2006The Minister for Information Technology, Hon David Cunliffe, and the Minister Responsible for the National Library, Hon Judith Tizard have released a discussion document on the draft New Zealand Digital Content Strategy.
National Librarian, Penny Carnaby, said she expected the draft New Zealand Digital Content Strategy to "make an enormous amount of rich New Zealand content available. For example, people will be able to access quality e-commerce, e-scholarship, e-research and e-learning as part of the Digital Content Strategy, and use and adapt it to benefit their personal, business, and family lives". The National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa is coordinating the consultation on the draft Strategy, with submissions due by 20 December 2006. "The draft Content Strategy takes a wide view of digital content, examining the economic and social benefits to New Zealand and taking a strategic view on how we all create, access and leverage content that is created for many different purposes, Ms Carnaby said." "In this discussion we're talking about easy access for all New Zealanders to the worldwide web, wikis, blogs, social software, advanced networks and citizen created content. People can create their own content, share content, and modify it for their needs, including data, photographs, text, graphics, 3D images, spatial models, maps, music, film and software. I am tremendously excited about what might be possible and I hope that people will engage in this discussion." The National Library is currently establishing a National Digital Heritage Archive, which will be key to the Digital Content Strategy. This project follows moves requiring electronic published material to be deposited with the National Library. The National Digital Heritage Archive means that in 50 or 100 years time people will be able to look back on New Zealand's digital memory and discover the legacy of what was important to our national identity. Ms. Carnaby outlined her vision of the draft New Zealand Digital Content Strategy by saying, "we're talking about creating an extraordinary choice of quality e-resources that are visible, searchable and easily accessed. For New Zealanders it will mean greater access to content about themselves and their country. For New Zealand businesses it will support productivity increases and in turn our country's market presence in the world." This draft Digital Content Strategy is aligned to the government's Digital Strategy, which set the direction for information and communications technology to 2010.
