Proposed LIANZA Continuing Professional Development Calendar For 2012

This month I have been busy trying to source and confirm professional development courses for 2012.

I try to source courses to match the subject areas most requested by LIANZA members.  This information is gathered from direct requests and course evaluations received.

This year you’ve identified your course priorities as being:

  • searching skills (primarily database searching)

  • customer services (managing difficult behaviours, both clients and colleagues)

  • collection management (a range of requests in this area)

  • managing e-resources

  • social media/web 2.0.

Additionally the LIANZA Council have had input into what they see as priorities.

Currently I have confirmed:

RDA (Resource Description and Access)
The format and timing of this training is uncertain. Staff at the National Library won’t know what training model to adopt until sometime next year.  What they do know is that there is likely to be some level of face-to-face training to supplement the online resources available and that the earliest possible date would be November 2012.

Additionally I am in discussions with library colleagues about the possible production of an online course around searching skills.  At this stage it’s still just an idea that I’m pursuing.

I also intend to try and find a presenter to fulfill the dealing with difficult behaviours subject request.

I’d like you to do three things for me:

  1. Provide feedback about the proposed events. Which ones interest you and which ones would you support/not support?

  2. What other subjects do you rate as professional development priorities for you in 2012?

  3. Can you recommend a presenter – perhaps a colleague or maybe yourself?

NOTE: I haven’t determined registration costs for any event yet.  If your support depends on cost then estimate it based on an average of this year’s prices plus a bit more to cover increased annual costs i.e. estimated cost for a full day workshop $220 and $170 for a half day event (member rates).  This is a very rough guide.
