JOHN HARRIS AWARD
The John Harris Award is presented by the Association in recognition of notable published work, such as in the bibliographical, critical, historical or administrative fields, which represent a contribution to librarianship in New Zealand. The scope of the study should be reasonably specific, there is no restriction on the length of the written work and the study should be the result of original research. There is no restriction on the number of awards, but they are made sparingly. Nominations should be submitted by 30 May for works published within the three previous years. EDITH JESSIE CARNELL TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP - (Next Awarded in 2010)
Background This scholarship was established as a result of a bequest in the will of Mr Archibald George William Dunningham, named in honour of Edith Jessie Carnell. Edith Jessie Carnell was a British Librarian who worked in New Zealand between 1939-1944 as liaison between the NZ Library Association and the Country Library Service. This scholarship is awarded biennially and it is intended that the scholarship be used to enhance the knowledge and development of the profession in New Zealand, the aims of the New Zealand Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa and to further the continuing professional development of the successful applicant. The Scholarship shall be awarded for the purpose of assisting an individual to travel outside New Zealand for: a. Research b. A study visit c. Attending a conference Qualification Criteria - Current Personal member of LIANZA
- Member for at least 5 years.
- Currently engaged in Library or Information work with a minimum of 5 years experience and the scholarship must be taken up within one year of its being offered.
- Only in very exceptional circumstances should applications for this scholarship be accepted from current national office-holders and national councillors. If such applications are received then the Chair of the assessment committee must ensure that the nominee takes no part in any discussions regarding the award of the scholarship.
To be considered for the Scholarship candidates must: - Apply in writing
- State their professional aim for the travel
- Write an outline of their course of study, research, purpose for attending the conference
- Provide a plan and time-frame for dissemination of the results of the research or study
- Supply names of two referees who are asked to specifically comment on how closely the application matches the judging criteria set out below.
Judging Criteria In making the award the panel will take into account the following criteria: - The current relevance to the profession of the area of study chosen
- The degree to which the study will further the aims of LIANZA
- The candidate's commitment to the profession
- Proven ability or interest in the project subject
- Potential to apply the knowledge of the subject within the profession
- Proven ability to be able to communicate orally and verbally
Conditions
- The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Disseminate the results of their research through other forums (e.g. delivering a paper at the LIANZA Conference, conducting a workshop or seminar for LIANZA members AND - Write a research paper on the area of study chosen, and/or - Produce an article to be published in NZ Libraries within a 6-month period from completion of travel (a synopsis of the research paper - The successful candidate will enter into a contract with the Association regarding timeframes, completion dates, forms of dissemination of study findings, penalties for non-completion. The final 10% of grant will be paid after the submission of their research report or article for NZ Libraries.
- The scholarship recipient must not publish, have accepted for publication, or present the results of their research publicly elsewhere prior to submission of the results to LIANZA in one of the methods detailed in clause 9 of these award guidelines.
- The successful applicant will be expected to participate in any LIANZA publicity promoting the Award.

ADA FACHE FUND Background Ada Fache (1918–1994) was a stalwart of the library profession who spent most of her career at Dunedin Public Library culminating in her appointment as City Librarian in 1960 - (only the second woman to hold this position in a metropolitan library). Throughout her career she retained a strong interest in library education, encouraging many in a practical way to obtain library qualifications and in her will Miss Fache left the Association a bequest of "one-twentieth of her estate for general purposes". A fund was established in 1995 by the then NZLIA National Council to provide an award or awards to assist with an individual's, or individuals' continuing professional development. Purpose of Award An award (or awards) will be offered annually to provide a personal member/s of LIANZA, whose application best meets the criteria, with some assistance towards their professional development. The amount of the annual grant is decided each year by the LIANZA Council. The award is worth approximately $600. Potential uses of the award may include assisting attendance at the LIANZA Conference or a continuing professional development course.
Qualification Criteria Applicants must: - Be a current personal member of LIANZA
- Have been a personal member for a minimum of three (3) consecutive years since obtaining a library or information management qualification.
- Be working in a situation which can be considered "isolated".
Applications in writing should be submitted to the Business Development Manager, LIANZA including: - the nature of applicant's isolation
- the potential benefits of undertaking continuing professional development
- details of the proposed use of the award
- the names and contact details of two referees
Conditions
- The award will need to be taken up within 12 months of the announcement of the award.
- Terms for the payment of the award will be negotiated on an individual basis with the successful applicant/s.
- The winner/s will be required to prepare a brief written report to Council within three months of the award being uplifted.
- The report will describe an aspect of the recipient/s professional life which has developed as a direct result of the award.
- This report may subsequently be published in the Association's journal/s, or the recipient/s may be requested to present the report at some appropriate Association meeting or gathering.

LIANZA RUA MANO SCHOLARSHIP Mihi E nga mana, e nga reo, e nga karangatanga maha, tena koutou, tena tatou katoa. Each year LIANZA offers a scholarship worth $1,000 to support Maori students undertaking library and information studies, and where appropriate to strengthen their knowledge in Te Reo Mÿori and tikanga Maori.

PAUL SZENTIRMAY SPECIAL LIBRARIANSHIP SCHOLARSHIP This award is next available in 2010 BackgroundThis Scholarship is established from the bequest in the will of Mr. Paul Szentirmay, FNZLA, MNZM, Tisztikereszt (Hungarian Officer’s Cross). In 1960, Paul Szentirmay completed the one-year postgraduate diploma at the New Zealand Library School and later went on to lecture there in information and knowledge management where he was a formative influence on many who came into the profession at that time. Paul later worked as the Chief Librarian at the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Director of the National Library’s Reference and Interloan Services Division and later as second Deputy National Librarian. In 1988, the year of his retirement, Paul was awarded the NZLIA Fellowship - the highest professional accolade, awarded to those who have made a sustained contribution. During his career Paul was a foundation Chairman of the Special Libraries Section 1970-3, a member of the NZLA Council 1973-4, the Editor of several editions of DISLIC – the Directory of Special Libraries & Information Services, and the Convenor of the Working Group on Information Transfer. Paul’s association with libraries continued after his retirement – he initiated and formed the National Library Society. Paul was conferred life membership of both the National Library Society and of LIANZA. Purpose of ScholarshipThe Scholarship is intended to be used to enhance the knowledge and development of library and information services, particularly in the area of special library and information services, in New Zealand. The Scholarship will enable the successful applicant to make a valuable contribution to special library and information research in NZ or support those in NZ seeking leadership roles in this area. It is intended that the Scholarship will support recipients in the following ways, by acting as - A research scholarship for those working in special libraries and information services
- A study scholarship to encourage those doing their: Masters in Library and Information Science (MLIS) research paper; or Masters of Information Management (MIM) research paper; or a doctoral thesis in library and information science or information management from a suitably accredited school of study – to focus their research in an area of special library and information service work
- A leadership scholarship to help someone from a small special library and information service attend the Aurora Leadership School run by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).
- A scholarship for a proposed research project that the trustees will use to invite an expression of interest in doing research in.
It is not intended to present the Scholarship to be used solely for travelling to conferences or visiting institutions but may be used for such a purpose if substantial research is associated with the travel.
Timing and Value of Scholarship
The Scholarship is to be awarded every 3 years. In the event that no suitable application is received for that year, the Scholarship may not be awarded and will be held over and made available the following year. Application for the Scholarship will be advertised in April, with selection of the successful applicant completed for the announcement of the award of the Scholarship at the LIANZA Conference. The amount of the Scholarship offered will be determined by the Trustees of Paul Szentirmay’s Estate and the Trustee will inform LIANZA of the maximum amount that may be awarded. Qualification criteriaThe Scholarship is awarded to a current Personal member of LIANZA. The person must be currently engaged in Library or Information work/study with a minimum of at least two years work experience in a library or information service. In making the Scholarship, the selection panel will take into account the following criteria: - Applicant(s)’s commitment to the profession
- Proven interest or ability to apply the knowledge of the subject to the betterment of special librarianship or information work in New Zealand.
- Projects that encouraged collaboration and instigate new approaches within the special library field, including knowledge management, information search, retrieval and analysis, and information roles in research and applied sectors.
Conditions of the ScholarshipThe successful applicant(s) will enter into a contract with LIANZA regarding timeframes, completion dates, and forms of dissemination of progress reports and study findings, penalties for non-completion and condition of Scholarship payment. The Scholarship must be taken up within one year of it being offered and the recipients must not publish or have accepted for publication elsewhere prior to submission of results for LIANZA. The Scholarship recipient must record acknowledgement of the Scholarship in their publication. The successful applicant(s) will normally disseminate results of their research through: - Progress reports to LIANZA who may use these reports as appropriate.
- Delivering a paper at the LIANZA Conference or workshops
- Write a research paper for publication in LIANZA and in other published media.
- The successful recipient will be expected to participate in any LIANZA publicity promoting the Scholarship.
Selection ProcessThe selection panel of three assessors will meet in one location to make the decision on the successful candidate. The panel will consist of: one Trustee of Paul Szentirmay’s Estate, a LIANZA representative appointed by the LIANZA Council, and a professional representing the special librarianship and information service.
AdministrationApplication for the Scholarship must be in writing and should include; - a plan and time-frame for the start and completion of the projects, progress reports, delivery of published findings and publication dates
- names of referees with contact information, who can comment on the qualification criteria. Provide documentation from one of the referees supporting the application for the Scholarship. All referees must be able to be contacted by the panel.
