November 2006Continuing Professional Development in the Hikuwai region. This month three very worthwhile one day workshops entitled “Leadership through Career Management,” were held in the region by Sally Lewis & Associates. The facilitators being Sally Lewis & Debbie Dawson. The programme was designed to assist participants in evaluating their role within their organisations, their fitness for their jobs, and how to identify career opportunities. A range of activities were used to encourage everyone to assess their own work values, motivational skills, personal attributes, life goals and any associated constraints. Small group work provided opportunities for discussions with people from different organisations, and this sharing helped give different perspectives on each topic. New techniques for taking the initiative in one’s career development were presented and discussed. The importance of planning one’s career development, taking responsibility for one’s own learning, identifying trends in the library profession, sharing the learning with team leaders & encouraging feedback, as well as using the workbook as a tool for further development, were all emphasised. Overall, participants learnt how to increase their self-confidence in the workplace, to enable them to utilise opportunities and contribute better to the effectiveness of their library organisations in an ever-changing environment.
